Game Review:

Optimus Prime – A name that is known throughout the world to generations who grew up with and are still discovering Transformers: Robots In Disguise. Thanks to Michael Bay’s action-packed movies; Transformers have been reignited and are going strong in the 21st Century with games and toys topping the world-wide shelves. Although reception of the games have been less than expected there is clear sign within each title that much effort has been put into them with the strength to carry their own without the movie and series support.

“Autobots – Let’s Role” – A phrase often used by the Autobots (good guys) leader and champion Optimus Prime, as they battled to keep the evil Decepticons (bad guys) at bay lead by their champion and commander Megatron.

Enter Transformers: War for Cybertron. This game stands on its own tall feet without needing help from other titles. It recalls the time before the Autobots and Decepticons crash landed on our Earth where the Transformers home world Cybertron is on the brink of ruin due to Megatron’s mutiny and declaring war on the Autobots. With the split factions in the heat of a devastating civil war there seems little hope to end the conflict. This tale, however offers more to the games by telling the story from both Autobots and Decepticon sides and find out what motivated Megatron to such a destructive act. This is a game for all Transformers fans and should be played without hesitation; let’s look into why this is to be true.

Gameplay consists of solo missions, cooperative missions and competitive challenges. As with most third-person shooter games, Transformers: War for Cybertron doesn’t highlight strictness or accurateness. In its place, players are given major destructive tools made for grinding their way through the expansive campaign and convincing online multiplayer. The structure of this games main campaign can see one; two or even three players participate on either the Autobots or Decepticon sides. The campaign is separated into two halves: Decepticons followed by Autobots (you can start playing as the Autobots, but the story is intended to be told by starting with the Decepticons). Within each of these campaigns the sections are broken down into five chapters. Playing as both factions is a great way to experience Cybertron, and it also lets players feel the power of the all mighty Decepticons and the ever defending righteousness Autobots.
The campaign is so much fun, both with your friends or just on your own this game provides more entertainment than you can handle. There is so much detail to look at within Cybertron and it is hard not to stop for a moment and bask in the beauty of the warring world. Enemy A.I. isn’t the most challenging of systems, however crank up the difficulty and it will more than make up for the experience.

Shotguns, pistols, machine guns, sniper rifles, heavy weapons, missile launchers, grenades, detachable turrets, and more, does this sound interesting? Players will have an abundance of weaponry at their disposal to tackle the gameplay and succeed in the objective. Each Transformer is specified their own unique attributes such as cloaking, hovering, energy sapping, etc. Because the campaign is divided into chapters, you’ll be able to re-visit a chapter multiple times, with or without friends, selecting different characters or difficulty settings, which is a big augment for replay value.

Where this game is lacking of challenging puzzles like in many other such titles it more than makes up with complete destructive experiences. The horde-mode outside the main story is a fun instalment as you can defend against wave after wave of mechanical warriors. The biggest setback for Transformers : War for Cybertron is the repetitiveness of the entire campaign, however if you can get past the bopping, dodging, jumping and shooting tactic that aids the entire journey then this is not a major problem.

There are multiple classes with sub-specialties, the ability to unlock new attributes through experience, and customizing, mixing and matching load-outs and characteristics makes for a rewarding time despite a lack of exertion. Included within the game are modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, zonal control and objective-oriented modes to keep the competitive portion of the game fresh and stimulating.

High Moon Studios (the creators of the game) have outdone themselves with the design and creation of the Transformer models within the game. Cybertron is no less than breath-taking and as said before can lead to distraction within the game, but a good distraction. Sound-wise I was very impressed and not only with the games effects but also the voice action, which in turn brought the game to life, gave the characters personality and kept to the original Transformers way of life incorporated within. Controls are simple and so they should be as with a touch of a button, transforming is easy. The slightly provoking issue with the controls is that some of the weaponry can take more time to reload and fire, which when under enemy fire can be a bit, vexing.

Transformers: War for Cybertron beholds the mechanics of a more than homage to the franchise but also just a really good game for fans and even to those who are unfamiliar with Cybertron’s children. I for one have this title in my shopping basket and will play it numerous times over the coming months, however if you are generally not a big fan of third-person shooters then perhaps you will merely want to rent it. Either way Transformers: War for Cybertron blasts its way onto planet Earth with an overwhelming effect.
